Hi Mary Beth,
an "unknown" treasure here in Chicagoland is the Baha'i (I think that's how it's spelled) Temple in Wilmette. It's a big, beautiful, white dome shaped building with a lovely garden encircling it. It's free to walk around the garden, and very peaceful since it doesn't draw a lot of people. And another plus is the park/beach across the street.
